Read: James 1:22-25
Memory Verse: James 1:25
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
I heard about a mirror that will take 10 lbs. off of the way you look! It is called a Skinny Mirror (look it up on Google). It sounds like a nice idea and it would probably make you feel better when you look at yourself in the mirror, but the truth is that you would be looking at a lie!
We put way too much emphasis on how we look and are obsessed about our weight here in America. Mirrors are not meant to make us feel good; they are to help us to see ourselves for what we really are and show us what we need to do to make it better.
The word “beholding” in verse 23 of our passage is like looking in the mirror and seeing that you need to put make-up on, comb your hair, or shave. You see the problem and know you need to deal with it. To “Looketh” in verse 25 means to “lean or bend forward; to get up close”. This is what we do when we put on make-up, shave, or comb our hair (if you have hair to comb).
When you put on your uniform of the day you look in the mirror to make sure it is clean and neat, straight and lined upright, and that everything is in place like it should be. Take time each morning, and throughout the day to make sure you are spiritually lined up. See if there is something that is out of place and that you should get up close and personal to fix it.
Meditation for the Day: Ask God to help you to see yourself as others see you and to get up close and personal with the Holy Spirit to correct it.
Assignment: Choose one area in your life that you “see” is not right and work on that area today.
For Fun: Use one of the apps that distort your facial features and share it with a loved one. Talk about how we worry about how people perceive us but don’t do anything to correct it as God would have us do.
